For the longest time, from antiquity right up until relatively recently, people were obliged to dig wells for water. This was a back-breaking and expensive process, and wells could be either communal or privately owned. They are usually encountered inside or just on the outskirts of villages and were meant to serve domestic water needs. On the opposite end, agricultural wells covered the water needs of farmers and stock breeders. This well belongs to the latter category and appears to be a relatively recent construction. Most likely built to replace an older pre-existing well, its mouth is covered by a square metal cover.
