Embolo Self-managed Cafe
Visitors to the village of Leptopoda can stop to rest at this traditional coffee house, which has its own unique way of operation. Known throughout Chios, this self-managed establishment functions year-round and not just during tourist season.
It’s a revival, of sorts, of a traditional non-profit coffee and grocery shop. The two local village associations founded it to serve both the residents of the village and visitors and tourists. “Self-service” is the key word here: the customer is entrusted with everything from product preparation and serving to tidying up and putting items back after use.
Visitors to this picturesque little shop might feel like they’ve stepped into a time capsule or a miniature folklore museum. Apart from the coffee, teas or other beverages available, customers can find examples of everyday products that were once indispensable for the local homes.
